Romantic Outlook is a grand hillside estate in the wooded hills of Sintra, half an hour west of Lisbon and a world away in feel. A pale palacete with a neoclassical portico, it is arranged over several floors and wrapped in formal terraced gardens that fall away towards the coastal plain, with the Atlantic visible in the distance on clear days. Inside there are fourteen bedrooms and a run of gracious reception rooms, most with fireplaces and antiques, so a party of up to thirty has room to spread out and still gather for dinner. The grounds are the great luxury here: two swimming pools, wide sun terraces, an outdoor kitchen, a kitchen garden of home-grown produce and an ornamental garden terrace made for long banquets under the trees. It is a house built for occasions, a milestone birthday, a family reunion, a wedding party or simply a large group who want space, privacy and character rather than a modern rental. Daily housekeeping keeps it running, and a chef can be arranged for the days you would rather not cook. Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport is around a 30 to 40 minute drive away.

Sintra is at its best from late spring to early autumn, when warm, dry days pair with the hills' cooler microclimate to make the gardens and pools a pleasure. July and August are the warmest and liveliest, ideal for a summer gathering. Spring and September bring green landscapes, wildflowers and quieter roads. Winter is cool and can be wet, but the fireplaces and grand rooms make the house a cosy retreat off-season.

Why we chose it

We chose it for the sense of occasion. Very few houses give a group of thirty this combination of grandeur and warmth: formal gardens and grand rooms on one hand, a kitchen garden and a family kitchen on the other. The two pools and the ornamental garden terrace make it a natural setting for a celebration, while the Sintra hills, cool, green and full of palaces to explore, give the estate a romance that beach villas cannot. Add Lisbon half an hour away and a chef on call, and it becomes one of the most complete large-group houses we have found in Portugal, as suited to a quiet family reunion as to a party.
