TheChosenStay is a curated directory of luxury villas, ski chalets and private estates. It exists because finding genuinely exceptional accommodation has become harder, not easier, despite the volume of platforms and listings available.
The problem is not a shortage of properties. It is that quality is buried inside platforms built for scale, not selection. TheChosenStay exists to fix that. Every listing on this site is a deliberate editorial decision made against a defined set of standards.
If a property is here, it cleared the bar. If it did not, it is not here.
How we choose
The selection criteria
Properties are assessed across four areas before they are considered for inclusion. All four must be satisfied.
Architecture and design
The property must be genuinely distinctive. Strong interiors alone are not sufficient. We look for spaces conceived with intent: materials, proportion and the relationship between the interior and its setting. A property that looks acceptable in photographs but was built without conviction does not qualify.
Setting and location
The best properties are inseparable from where they sit. Position on the mountain. A working relationship with the sea. A private estate that earns its countryside. Setting is not a checkbox. It is part of what a guest is booking, and it is assessed accordingly.
Guest experience
We assess what it is actually like to stay here. Service quality, booking conditions, communication standards and what guests consistently report. A beautiful property with poor service does not qualify. The experience on arrival must match the expectation set by the photography.
Privacy and exclusivity
The properties we feature are private stays. A guest is not sharing a pool, a lobby or a schedule with other parties. The experience must be genuinely exclusive to the people who booked it. Shared facilities or hotel-adjacent arrangements are disqualifying.
Our ratings
How we rate properties
Every property in the directory carries an editorial rating out of ten. These are not aggregated guest reviews and they are not algorithmic scores. Each rating is assigned by the TheChosenStay editorial team after detailed assessment of the property.
Ratings are broken down across four dimensions.
Location
How effectively the property uses its setting. Proximity to what matters, quality of views, orientation and the character of the surrounding environment.
Design
The architectural and interior quality. Materials, proportion, finish and whether the space was conceived with genuine intent rather than assembled for the rental market.
Uniqueness
What makes this property specifically worth choosing. The character, history or defining feature that sets it apart from comparable options in the same destination.
Amenities
The quality and completeness of the facilities. Private pools, outdoor spaces, kitchen, staff and the standard to which everything is maintained.
The overall rating is a composite of these four dimensions. A property that performs unevenly will carry that in its individual scores. The overall figure gives a clear headline; the breakdown tells the fuller story.
