A Coastal Crown

VILLALAGOS, ALGARVE, PORTUGAL

A Coastal Crown is a piece of contemporary architecture as much as a holiday villa. Set on the cliffs above the Atlantic near Lagos, on the western Algarve, it is a long, low white house crowned by a dramatic curved, cantilevered roof that reads as sculpture against the sky. Full-height glass runs the length of the living spaces so the ocean is in view from almost everywhere, and a heated infinity pool on the seaward terrace appears to spill towards the water. Six en-suite bedrooms sleep twelve, most opening to sea-view terraces, and the house is unusually well equipped: a home cinema, a gym, a games area with a pool table and a glass-walled study set over a double-height void. Inside, the mood is calm and refined, warm timber and pale stone against white walls and blue accents. Outside, lawns, timber decks and a sunset dining terrace step down towards the cliff edge. It suits a family or group who want design, space and a spectacular setting, with the beaches and bays of the western Algarve, and the town of Lagos, a short drive away. Faro Airport is around a one hour to one hour fifteen drive east.

Late spring to early autumn brings warm, dry days and reliable Atlantic sunshine, ideal for the infinity pool, terraces and nearby beaches.

The Algarve is at its best from late spring to early autumn, when warm, dry days and reliable sunshine make the pool, terraces and beaches a pleasure. July and August are the warmest and busiest months. May, June and September bring fine weather with fewer crowds and better value. Winter is mild and much quieter, and the well-equipped interior, with its cinema and gym, makes the villa a comfortable retreat even out of season.

Why we chose it

We chose it for the architecture and the setting, which together are hard to match on the Algarve. The sweeping cantilevered roof and the wall of glass give the house a genuine sense of drama, yet it is warm and comfortable rather than austere, and the clifftop position over the Atlantic is exceptional. It is also properly equipped for a group: a cinema, a gym, a games room and a glass-walled study mean there is somewhere for everyone, whatever the weather. Six sea-view suites, a heated infinity pool and the dramatic coastline around Ponta da Piedade minutes away make it a standout base for a family or group who care about design.

01The Architecture

A Coastal Crown is a genuinely accomplished piece of modern architecture. The house is conceived as a long, single-storey bar along the cliff, its flat white planes crowned by a sweeping, curved roof that cantilevers out over the terraces like a wave frozen in place, punctured by organic skylight cut-outs. Full-height glass runs the seaward length so the living spaces…

02The Interior

Inside, the mood is refined, warm and pared back. White walls and pale stone are grounded by rich timber, oak floors, panelled walls and fitted joinery, with soft grey and blue furnishings and the odd piece of contemporary art. The living spaces are open and generous, arranged along the glass so the sea is always present, with a long dining…

03The Outdoor

The outdoors is built around the view and the light. A heated infinity pool runs along the seaward terrace, its edge dissolving towards the Atlantic, with a timber sun deck and loungers alongside. Wide stone and timber terraces wrap the house, giving a choice of places to lounge, dine or take in the sunset, including a dining terrace laid for…

04The Location

A Coastal Crown stands on the cliffs near Lagos, on the western Algarve, one of the most scenic stretches of the Portuguese coast. The dramatic sea cliffs, grottoes and golden bays of Ponta da Piedade are minutes away, along with a string of beautiful beaches such as Praia da Luz, Porto de Mós and Praia Dona Ana. The lively harbour…

05Ideal For

Best for a family or group who want striking design, space and a spectacular clifftop setting. The six sea-view suites and the cinema, gym, games area and study suit multi-generational families or groups of friends, and the heated pool extends the swimming season. The clifftop position and infinity pool mean young children need supervision.
