Mighty Pine is a piece of quiet, design-led architecture set deep in the Alentejo pine forest between Melides and Comporta. Rendered in warm, sandy tones that seem to grow out of the soil, it is arranged as two low single-storey buildings among umbrella pines and cork oaks, with full-height glass framing the trees from almost every room. Six double bedrooms are spread across the two buildings, giving a group of twelve privacy and calm, while a vast open-plan living room, dining space and oak kitchen bring everyone together. The interiors are pared back but warm: polished floors, earthy plaster walls, live-edge timber and hand-woven textiles, so the mood is serene rather than stark. A sunken lounge and a long table anchor the main pavilion, and every bedroom has its own character and its own view into the woodland. Outside, a long pool runs along a timber deck in the shade of the pines, with loungers, a barbecue and a table for slow, alfresco meals. This is a house for switching off, cooking, swimming and reading among the trees, with one of Europe's longest beaches, Carvalhal, around ten minutes away by car. Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport is roughly a one hour fifteen to one hour thirty drive north.

Why we chose it

We chose it for the architecture and the calm. Comporta and Melides are full of pretty rustic villas, but Mighty Pine is something more considered: a sculptural, earthy modern house where the pines press right up to the glass and the light does the decorating. Splitting the six bedrooms across two buildings gives families and couples real privacy, while the enormous living room and the long pool keep everyone together. It is deeply relaxing, more retreat than resort, and yet one of the finest stretches of Atlantic beach in Portugal is a short drive away. For a group who care about design and want to properly unwind, it is hard to beat.
