The Spirit of Joy is a piece of modern architecture as much as a holiday house. Set in a private landscape of cork oaks and umbrella pines near Comporta, it is arranged as three low white pavilions that sit quietly among the trees, all clean lines, full-height glass and glazed courtyards that bring the branches indoors. Seven bedrooms are spread across the three buildings, which gives a group of thirteen real separation, while a generous open-plan living room, dining room and kitchen draw everyone back together. The interiors are pared back and calm: white walls, polished floors, mid-century furniture and little clutter, so the eye goes to the light and the trees. Outdoors there are two swimming pools set among the oaks, a tennis court, and a sail-shaded terrace with a barbecue for long, slow lunches. This is the essence of Comporta, understated, design-led and deeply relaxing, a place to read, swim and cook rather than to be entertained. You will want a car or bikes, as the beaches and the village are a short drive away. Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport is around a one hour to one hour fifteen drive north.

Why we chose it

We chose it for the architecture and the calm. Comporta is full of thatch-and-white rustic villas, but this is something rarer: a genuinely accomplished piece of modern design, sculptural and serene, where the cork oaks come right up to the glass. Splitting the seven bedrooms across three pavilions is clever, giving families or couples their own space while keeping one big living room, two pools and a tennis court to share. It is a house for people who care about design and want to switch off completely, cooking, swimming and reading among the trees, with the famous Comporta beaches a short drive away when the mood takes.
