CHALETMEGEVE, FRENCH ALPS, FRANCE

Megeve Centre 7 is a piece of design as much as a chalet, a striking barn conversion in the very centre of Megeve, one of the chicest and oldest resorts in the French Alps. Old timber, blackened steel and marble are worked into soaring, sculptural spaces, the centrepiece a double-height living room under the original barn beams, hung with constellations of sculptural lighting and walled in glass. Seven en-suite bedrooms sleep fifteen, one a family bunk room, and a lift links the floors to a wellness area with a private indoor pool that opens to a garden terrace, a hot tub, a sauna and a steam room, along with a glass-walled wine cellar. It is fully catered, with a chef, butler and housekeeper, so the days run themselves. The village centre, with its cobbled streets, designer boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants, is 150 metres away, and the Chamois lift into the Megeve ski area is a short walk. It suits a group who care about design and want the buzz of the village on the doorstep. Geneva Airport is around an hour and a quarter drive, and the Megeve altiport is minutes away.

peak crowdpremium value

December to April is the ski season in Megeve and across the Evasion Mont-Blanc area, with the Chamois lift a short walk from the chalet.

Megeve is a winter resort first, and the chalet is at its best from December to April. December to February brings the coldest, most reliable snow and the festive atmosphere, with the Christmas, New Year and February half-term weeks the busiest. March and early April offer sunnier days and spring snow, often the sweet spot for value and conditions, though being lower than the highest resorts Megeve snow can soften late in the season. In summer the mountains open for hiking, biking and golf, and the village stays lively.

Why we chose it

We chose it for the architecture. There are many comfortable chalets in Megeve, but few are this bold or this beautifully done: a genuine barn conversion where the old structure has been opened into dramatic, light-filled volumes and finished in timber, steel and marble to a very high standard. That it also sits in the centre of the village, a short walk from the lifts, and comes with a pool, spa, wine cellar and full catered service, makes it a rare thing. For a group who appreciate design and want Megeve's restaurants and boutiques on the doorstep, it is one of the most special chalets we have found.

01The Architecture

Megeve Centre 7 is an accomplished conversion of an old Alpine barn in the heart of the village. The original timber frame and beams have been kept and celebrated, opened into a soaring double-height living space and framed against walls of glass, while blackened steel, marble and reclaimed wood bring a contemporary edge. Sculptural lighting, constellations of glass globes, hangs…

02The Interior

Inside, the chalet is dramatic and richly textured. The double-height living room is the heart of it, deep sofas gathered under the old barn frame and sculptural lighting, with a fireside sitting area and walls of glass to the terrace. A design kitchen and breakfast bar in blackened metal and timber sit beside a dining room with a round table…

03The Outdoor

The outdoors blends a village setting with a proper wellness garden. The main living spaces open to a terrace, and below, the indoor pool slides open through full-height glass to a planted garden terrace with loungers and an outdoor dining table, a rare thing in the centre of the village. A hot tub, sauna and steam room complete the wellness…

04The Location

Megeve is one of the oldest and most fashionable resorts in the Alps, developed by the Rothschild family, and it is known as much for its cobbled medieval village, designer shopping and gourmet restaurants as for its skiing. The Chamois lift into the Megeve ski area, part…
